Application Guidelines

The MEYHM Family Foundation Scholarship is a financial assistance program that is awarded annually to a select group of first-generation adults or college-bound seniors of refugee or asylum seeker families graduating from DC/MD/VA (DMV) public schools who demonstrate strong vocational or academic skills, financial need, and community engagement. The scholarship may be renewed for additional years in certain cases related to higher education learning.

ELIGIBILITY:
  1. Applicant or parents of applicant must have refugee or asylum status with legal right to reside, attend school or work in the USA (including Special Immigrant Visa holders).
  2. Applicant must be either:
    • An adult (18 years or older) applying for vocational program training at a specific vocational training institution; or
    • A high school senior graduating from DMV public schools and applying for admission/enrollment at an accredited 2-year or 4-year community college (excluding any for-profit schools).
  3. Applicant must be a first-generation adult or college student in the USA with refugee or asylum status. For purposes of the MEYHM Family Foundation Scholarship, a first-generation adult or student will be defined as a student whose parent(s) have not earned an undergraduate college degree in the USA.
  4. Applicant’s family must have reported less than $50,000 adjusted gross income (AGI) in the previous calendar year, as proven by filed tax return or equivalent.
  5. If a graduating high school senior, applicant must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (at end of junior year).
  6. Applicants selected as finalists must participate in an interview with MEYHM Family Foundation board members.
  7. Applicants must submit a completed MEYHM Family Foundation Scholarship application.
AWARDS:
  1. Scholarship recipient will be chosen by MEYHM Family Foundation based on applicant’s status as a first-generation adult or college student, academic achievement, financial need, community engagement, and his/her application/interview.
  2. Applicant will be notified by MEYHM Family Foundation in writing if selected as a finalist for a scholarship. Finalist interviews will take place based on mutually agreed schedule. Format of interviews will be via phone and/or Zoom.
  3. Up to ten (10) students per year will be selected as winners for the MEYHM Family Foundation Scholarship. Each scholarship winner will receive up to either:
    • $3,000 per year toward vocational training; or
    • $5,000 per year toward college education.
  4. Scholarship funds may only be used to pay the Net Cost to attend the applicant’s vocational institution or community college (Net Cost is equal to Cost of Tuition less any other financial assistance, scholarship or grant that may have been awarded to the student).
  5. In the case of multiple semester programs, scholarship funds will be divided evenly between the Fall and Spring semesters, with funds made by the Foundation directly to the vocational or educational institution on the applicant’s behalf. No funds will be sent directly to any applicant.
  6. In order to receive scholarship funds, scholarship recipients must sign the MEYHM Family Foundation Scholarship Program Agreement, which includes the scholarship guidelines and a release statement granting MEYHM Family Foundation permission to publish the recipient’s name, financial award, choice of vocational or educational institution, and name/photo on our website or other media.
